Extended walks to the north or south of Nyaungshwe pass among extensive rice paddies dotted with Shan stupa ruins. Trails into the hills east of town lead to Pa-O villages and panoramic views of the lake area. A good and rugged all-day trek is to the monastery of Koun Soun Taungbo and nearby Ta-Eh Gu (Cave). You pass through two Pa-O villages on the way. Further away, and currently off-limits, are the ruins of Kekku.

Guided day hikes can be arranged by our hotel. When visiting the villages, it's better to contribute cash gifts to the village health fund rather than hand out medicines, toys or food. Pencils, paper notebooks and ballpoint pens are also welcome.Your guide should know what's appropriate and what's not. Usually the sayadaw (chief abbot) of the village accept such donations.Village elders prefer that any gifts intended for children be given to an adult, rather than directly to the children.
